TWILIGHT’S COMPETITION AT THE BOX OFFICE

Posted November 9th, 2008 By: Team Switzerland 13 Comments »

EOnline talked to some box office experts to get their opinions on what upcoming movies will be hits (and which won’t) and for the most part, they all predict that Twilight will be a success.

The holidays should be green for James Bond. Maybe less so for Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.
That’s the consensus opinion of box office experts asked to weigh in with their picks for the hits—and potential misses—of Hollywood’s holiday season, which, no matter what your calendar says, starts today.

Will Will Smith’s Seven Pounds weigh in? Was Beverly Hills Chihuahua just the warm-up act for Bolt?

Let the guessing begin.

Top Five Holiday Hits (Films Listed in Alphabetical Order):

Gitesh Pandya, Box Office Guru:

Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa (opening this weekend)
Quantum of Solace (the new 007 movie, opening Nov. 14)
The Day the Earth Stood Still (sci-fi remake, opening Dec. 12)
Twilight (teen vampire saga based on best-seller, opening Nov. 21)
Yes Man (Jim Carrey high-concept comedy, opening Dec. 19)

Jeff Bock, Exhibitor Relations:

Bedtime Stories (Adam Sandler fantasy comedy, opening Dec. 25)
Bolt (animated dog movie, opening Nov. 21)
The Day the Earth Stood Still

(Thanks Hugz)

I’m very happy that Twilight made it on two of the three lists. Poor Jeff Bock doesn’t seem to know much about Twilight since he left it off his list, but hopefully the movie will prove him wrong.

Which of these movies do you think poses the biggest threat to Twilight? Do you expect it will the highest grossing Holiday film?

More lists from more middle-aged men who have no clue about “Twilight”.

I square- If I see one more reference to Twilight as being a “teenage vampire story” I’m gonna scream!!! WAKE UP, people!!! I’m no teenager, and I was never that into vampires, but this saga has me SO intoxicated it’s not even funny! I know LOTS of non-teenagers on this site, too! We’re smart, mature, funny and obsessed- and guess what else? We have more money than teenagers, so we’ll be able to buy tickets to as many showings as we want!!!

I honestly think Twilight will do much better than #5 overall- it’s already beating that Bond movie in presales! I think it’ll be interesting to see what the totals are on opening weekend for our beloved Twilight and Disney’s “Bolt”. Let’s see who has the more rabid fanbase, shall we ;)

I agree with Tippy. Twilight is way more than just a teen vampire story! It’s an awesome, forbidden love story that everyone, male or female, of all ages, can enjoy! There is also plenty of action and enough “vampire” to keep your heart pounding! I’m a 42 year old Twilight MOM and I absolutely LOVE this story and can’t wait for the movie(s)!!! My 20 year old daughter and I will see it over and over in theaters, and am looking forward to owning the DVD(s)!!!

  • samantha

I agree. I started reading it this year and i am not a teenager. i can’t wait to see how much money it will make the opening weekend.

  • VanessaC

Tippy- you said it. Ppl who reference the movie that way are SO uninformed- about the movie/book as well as about the fanbase. It’s pretty freaking annoying, if you ask me. And you’re SO right about the adults having more money than the teenagers, and therefore giving Twilight an even bigger chance at success- not to mention adults follow their own rules and generally have their own modes of transportation, so honestly, I really see this movie making more money off the adult (in this case, by “adult” I mean 18 and up) crowd than the teen crowd- and all the uninformed ppl seem to forget that.

oh, and by the way, something tells me to bet on Twilight’s fanbase over Bolt’s- idunno, maybe it’s just some kind of funny feeling I have, but something tells me that Twilight’s fanbase is a LITTLE bit more rabid than Bolt’s. Maybe Alice’s foresight is rubbing off on me, but for some reason I feel pretty certain about this :) lol for anyone who couldn’t tell, those last couple sentences were dripping w/sarcasm.

Peter Facinelli told me to go watch BOLT?
lol. I don’t know why, but he just did.

But overall, I think Madagascar 2 is doing amazing in promotions…so it’s competition.
and Bolt is just getting started :\

Well, I think Twilight is going to do extremely well. I was coming home from an errand this afternoon and I saw Twilight advertised on a billboard. I thought, WOW! That looks great! I have to drive it tomorrow to take a pix of it. I don’t think Twilight is just for teenage girls…it’s got a huge fanbase (18 & over). I think the public is starving for a romantic vampire movie and luckily Twilight came along. I’m not talking about an ordinary movie…this movie is unique and it has such intensity between the lead actors. The trailers have peaked out interest & drawing all of us in. I’m so looking forward to it.

  • Runs with Vampires

Thank you Tippi! I agree, I’ve read those same words over and over “teenage love story”. It angers me too because I’m not a teenager, I’m addicted to these books; I’ve read them all at least 7 x each. I’m taking Opening Day off of work, I’ve already bought 2 showings, who knows maybe I’ll just spend the day at the Theatre or drive across the street to see if the other theatre has an earlier showing? Hey, I’ve already lined up someone to pick up my kids that afternoon from school. Twilight is going to do EXTREMELY well. My kids want to see Bolt but I told them it had to wait until the following weekend. That’s right, I am a Twilighter and I don’t want Help!!! Heh Heh Heh

I saw the movie Quantum of Solace which opened last week here in the Philippines and it was very, very disappointing. I really wanted it to be nice but it just didn’t deliver. I got the same reaction from friends and some even fell asleep in the theater. It was that bad, seriously. And I wish it would fail in the box office because I didn’t get my money’s worth.

We’re looking forward to Twilight. At least this one has humility especially the cast. I would very much want Twilight to be successful and prove the so called box office “experts” who know nothing about Twilight wrong.

By the way, I’m not a teenager. I’m 41 yr old Twilight fan. :-)

Haha, another male here, but I’m not middle-aged! I’m in my first year of college, so I’ve seen firsthand just how crazy high school girls (and a good deal of college girls, too) are about Twilight. I keep on saying it’ll see at least “Sex and the City” numbers, and others keep saying no, but I’m sticking to my guns, and on Nov 21 I’ll laugh in all their faces.

    My Holiday Top 5 Prediction:
    Quantum of Solace ($250 million)
    Madagascar 2 ($225 million)
    Twilight ($175 million)
    Bolt ($150 million)
    Seven Pounds ($125 million)

Sorry, I have to give the Will Smith movie the benefit of the doubt. Remember “Pursuit of Happyness” made $163 million.

As for myself, I’m going to see Twilight. Yes, I’m a male, and I want to see Twilight. I read the first three books (still trying to get a hold of the 4th), and I liked them. They were entertaining and, yes, romantic. I like entertainment. I like romance. I LOVE director Catherine Hardwicke. I was worried about the movie until I learned she was coming onboard, and from then on my first-day ticket has faced no doubt. See you guys at the theater!

What Twilight has going for it that the others don’t so much is repeat business. I don’t know of a Twilighter out there who will not be seeing this film more than once or numerous times. So, I think the steam won’t drop off after the 21st, but it will coast off gradually as any successful film will. Seeing as most fans already have their tickets (or at least will be getting them early) and it’s killing on fandango, add the casual filmgoer’s ticket sales and you have a hit.

  • michelle

I am a 44 year old Twilight fan…I was seventeen (& 18 &19) once and this brings me back…We all longed for those feelings…This story is certainly as refreshing for a 44 year old as it is for a 17 year old. Whoever said that this story is only for people with a 12-year-old mentality must lack passion…very sad…I will be in line at the box office along with my 20 and 13 year olds.

  • krystal

Um well like everyone else(or those who are sane) Twilight will come out on top. Teenage girls and Twilight is like ppl and t’v addicting and must be read everyday. So when it does come out the ppl too lazy to read the book will still have heard the buzz about Twilight and Twilighter’s from the all around the nation will not let anything stop them and seeing Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart kissing.

  • Finn

*Sigh* I love you guys! Reading your comments makes the bad prediction (about Twilight of course) that ‘Professional’ Box Office Predictors keep hitting me with away! Oh yeah I’m gonna say this again(I’m leaving the same comment all over the place but I can’t help myself). IN YOUR FACES YOU STINKING BOX OFFICE PROPHETS WHO THOUGHT THAT TWILIGHT WOULDN’T REACH AT LEAST $70 MILLION(Those who think Twilight was gonna be a hit does not include)!!! Sorry I’m Temperamental.
