Review by: Team Switzerland (Kara)
Shiver is a beautifully woven story written by Maggie Stiefvater and told through two alternating points of view. Grace, our first narrator, is a 17-year old high school student who was attacked as a child by a pack of hungry wolves and managed to narrowly escape with the help of a certain yellow-eyed wolf. Ever since that fateful day, she has grown up watching the wolves outside her house from a distance every winter and has always been drawn to that one particular yellow-eyed wolf.Sam, our second narrator, happens to be that yellow-eyed wolf that Grace is so naturally drawn to. The twist? Sam is only a wolf in the winter. In the summer, Sam transforms into his human form. During those colder months, Sam watches Grace from afar and longs to be with her and in his preferred human state. In the warmer months, Sam watches from afar again, still longing to be with Grace, but too shy to approach. After fate pushes these two together – in human form – a whirlwind romance develops and nature threatens to tear the two apart.
Maggie Stiefvater hit the nail on the head with Shiver. The plot was very unique, put a twist on the ‘standard’ werewolf tales, and always kept you on the edge of your seat. As I mentioned, the story is told through alternating points of view, and while that has the potential to make some books confusing, Stiefvater kept the transitions smooth and seamless. Grace and Sam are very well rounded, established characters that you feel connected to from the very beginning. The romance between these two is very genuine and Steifvater’s knack for poetic writing and thoughtful descriptions only heightens their love. It’s very easy to get engrossed in this book and it’s one of those that you don’t want to put down – ever. Stiefvater has a guaranteed hit on her hands with Shiver and it will undoubtedly catch on with lovers of paranormal romance, particularly lovers of Twilight. If the Twilight saga left you ‘Team Vampire’, Shiver may have you switching over to ‘Team Wolf’.
Shiver is an amazing book and we’re very much looking forward to giving away copies to 20 of you! We love hearing the thoughts of our readers so we can’t wait to read your tweets! Good luck!
