VANCOUVER SUN: NEW MOON FILMING SUCKED THE LIFEBLOOD OUT OF SCHOOL

Posted April 20th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 21 Comments »

As we all know, filming for New Moon is now set in Vancouver (as opposed to Oregon, where the bulk of Twilight was filmed), which throws in a curveball as far as filming locations go. To recreate the set for Forks High School, the film crew set up camp at David Thompson secondary school in Vancouver. I know what some of you may be thinking – ‘wow, I wish New Moon was filmed at my school!’ – well, think again, because a student from David Thompson has written into the Vancouver Sun to share her experience with having the film crew and cast at her school:

The Twilight fans who wish scenes from New Moon had been filmed at their school should think twice. I know I speak for other students at David Thompson secondary school in east Vancouver as well when I say we are so glad the New Moon crew has gone.

It seemed pretty cool at first, but when you mix in the hottest celebrities with a horrible film crew, the school turns into chaos. Closing the cafeteria for two days, taking over the foyer and forcing students to make detours and stop dead in our tracks during our break and lunch because they were filming a big-shot movie was not cool.

If they had wanted us to be quiet, perhaps they should’ve thought that through before taking over our school for two days. The crew acting like our school was theirs didn’t help either.

I’m also sure many staff and students did not appreciate outside stalker fans coming into the school trying to get a glimpse of Spunk Ransom either. Famous people are humans, too; they’d appreciate privacy just like you would.

Sure, I think it may be cool to have one of my favorite movies filming at my school, but I do realize it’s not all happiness and sunshine and that it does throw a big wrench into the equation. I do have to say though, I think she was a bit harsh. Yes, she attends that school, but sometimes things are out of your control. The influx of fans she may have a right to be angry about, but harping on the crew for ‘acting like the school is theirs’ was a bit much for me. Oh well, filming is over at the school, so I’m sure peace is restored.

Are you surprised at Ashley’s write-in? Do you think she had reason to be angry? How would you feel if a film crew used your school/office as a set?

I don’t understand why she’s upset about that. They needed a location to film and that school was chosen, of course they’re going to need people to be quiet. It was only for two days anyway. I don’t think this person was really keeping things in perspective.

I can understand a little hardship- but please! It’s exciting for something like this to happen….once in a lifetime thing for a major motion picture to be filmed at your school. Maybe she’s mad she couldn’t sit at her “normal” lunch table for a couple days… but my theory is that the boys of Twilight weren’t interested in her :) j/k.

BIG FRICKEN WOOPTY DOO! If New Moon was being shot in my school, I would have arrived at four in the morning, skipped class and been the biggest fricken pest this side of East Kish! GAH! I hate whiners. Heres a hanky Ashley.

Well, it’s the production company of the movie’s fault. If they just would have filmed at Kalama High School during SPRING BREAK again this year, NONE OF THIS would be an issue!!! Why in GODS NAME didn’t they just wait until Spring Break to film for the two days??? DUH!?!? It’s what they did last year for “Twilight”!!

  • tracy

ya, I wonder why they didn’t just wait for the weekend or spring break or something? but anyway, she shouldn’t be complaining… i mean, for pete’s sake its two days! get over it! i have stuff being filmed at my school all the time and I love it! I’m with Kristin on this one… maybe there was an issue of injured pride and self-esteem here. hahaha

I don’t think it was harsh at all. I’d be just as pissed, and probably say way worse things than she did if it was my school. They’re there to learn, and because they HAVE to be there. That’s ridiculous for crews to think that students in HIGH SCHOOL are going to just shut up for days on end because they decided to up and take over their school for a movie. It should not have been done while kids are in school; that was a very bad decision. Spring Break just passed; they could have waited to film until everybody was out. I’m sure half the students would have HAPPILY volunteered to be extras, but when you’re somewhere you resent being in the first place, and you’re being held there because there’s all kinds of cameras and random people up in your way, that’s incredibly frustrating. Don’t blame her one bit.

  • amanda

why would they have to wait untill spring break?? saturday…sunday… done… no interrupting school… i think they should’ve closed down the school, or made classes not mandatory for those two days, considering they shot during school hours. i can see the inconvience she’s referring to though.

  • mcullenvamp

i’m too old for school, but i woulda probably just kept my kids home from school when they were shooting since it’d be too distracting, or if they wanted to go to school anyway, i would tell them to be respectful and that people have a job to do and they should be honored to have their school featured like that…

  • patty

well yeha maybe they shouldn’t have clsoed the cafe for two, but I wis htehy would. I eman they could have just filmed during the time that sutend wer un’gi tne hte afe, and hey if you took film clas, perhap the teacher could ahve the kids sing up to be extrad durign that period for extra credit! liek do osmetyhing on extras. dude hell if I bumepd into any of the actros espcially robp attison, kristen stewat, ahsely gfrrene, and so fr adn stepheni I’d totally ask for their autograph and trie to ask to chat them up, dude I love rob pattsion. see when, I felel it soemthing well ikeid whty not liek osemthign that is cuatlolyi goign somewhre. now I don’t agree with certians areas being closed down during the day for ceritna (like you know the lbirabyr) beucae many sutdnets may need hat tiem to work

  • Joanne

I could see how having a movie filmed at your school could be a bit chaotic, but I think this girl took it a bit too far. Sure the crew’s attitude may have been annoying and having the cafeteria and foyer closed off kind of sucks, but let’s be honest here, kids love when there’s some kind of distraction interrupting school. Especially in high school, the majority of kids love it when there’s something going on to disrupt the regular flow of things. It’s like when former graduates used to come visit teachers and take 20 minutes out of class, everyone loves that. And it was only two days, I think she over-reacted a little.

  • emy

    she apparently hasn’t read Twilight.

  • kerrby

Dude I don’t blame her at all, school was hard enough getting up and going to on a regular day.. But having to get up go to school take detours when u don’t get much time to get to class anyway, have to be quiet for 2 days and have to watch crazy fans and security people.. It would all be very annoying and destracting.. I would’ve have gotten any work done.. I do think that they should’ve waited til spring break

  • angie

I find this reaction surprising coming from a school in “Hollywood North”. The kids ought to ask how much their school received in funds for future projects and repairs.

  • holly

ohhhh my goddd!!..noo wayy!..two WHOLE days of fumbled schedules??!..and being stoppped dead in the hallways?!?!..and the hottest celebrities!!?..and oh no, not detours!! haha.
yeah girl, it really sounds like you had it rough.
pshh are you kidding? lol waa go cry us another river, i find this quite hilarious.
stop being short-sided and be a little more grateful, for real.
theres a HUGE movie franchise that is and will go down in history being shot at YOUR school and you were there while it was going on!.. apparently you don’t understand, but that is soo cool!! and you are so lucky, you really should be grateful.

  • brittany

I can understand that having all the movie crew people and the crazy fans could have been irritating while you’re in school (which is a place that is usually hated). But I think she was a little too whiny! I mean there are other people on this earth that suffer way more horrific things than this and they do it daily without any whining because they just have to. I think if the worst thing that happens to you is that a movie is filmed at your school and you have to be quiet for two days, take detours, and deal with extra people and craziness then I think you should be greatful! At least you aren’t starving, homeless, can’t go to school, or anything worse. Get over it Ashley!!

  • jen-girl

Wow, I think she needs to take a chill pill.
She should be honored that NM was being filmed at her school: not all of us ever get the chance to walk on the same ground as the Twi celebs. And how many of us have even met the crazy fans (besides ourselves)? I mean, they must’ve been a blast to talk to!
And I also agree with what some people said above me about the crew waiting for Spring Break or a weekend or SOMETHING.
Oh darn, two days of silence in the halls and going out of their way to get to classes. Grow up, Miss Ashley.

  • twilightcountryresident

She must not be a true Twilight fan, or she wouldn’t care about being a little inconvenienced for only a couple of days. C’mon, it was TWO DAYS – big deal!

  • Mike

You people are insane i live in connecticut and people come here filming movies all the time not what i would call once in a life time…i even see celebrities once in a while to…alot of them live here to get away from all the crazy people asking for thier autographs…i agree with her i wouldnt want a buch of crazy fanatics, crew, cast, etc in my school disrupting everything…i got places to be and stuff to learn….you all think that twilight is gods gift to the world….get over it already…i read the first three books and got bored…i watched the movie and thought is was okay…nothing heartstopping amazing.

  • Ollie

Ok. first of all to have the hottest guy in your school is unreal and totally cool, and not everyone gets to see the twilight crew close up and maybe to even have a chance to talk to them. That was a very harsh thing to say and 2 days don’t make a difference. Second of all, the movie is the best and so are the books, and the twilight cast is not just ‘anything’! I wish that kind of thing would happen at my school, the best movie ever, with the hottest guys ever to be filmed at my school. So, why is she even making a big deal out of it? It’s just two days, gee!
Well, I love Twilight and all the other series and I wish something like that happened at my school.
I love ROBERT PATTINSON // EDWARD CULLEN 4EVA!!!
    mwa,
    Ollie.

ok well my opinion is that she was over reacting. I mean if they were at my school… :O I would go CRAZY! I would bee sooooo grateful and she should be too. but maybe thats just what i think cause im in love with twilight, but i guess if she isnt a big twilight fan then it could get annoying with having to deal with something that you dont like. But still chill out dudee like seriously it was two days. and if she had that big of a problem with it then why did she even go to school. i bet she could’ve skipped for two days. but again that was her option so whatever but if i were her i wouldnt be complaining cause she could’ve done stuff to get out of it. so yeahhh.
    Peace Out!
