VARIETY: PRODUCERS ACQUIRE THE MOVIE RIGHTS TO ‘THE HOST’

Posted September 22nd, 2009 By: Evie 26 Comments »

Variety is reporting that the rights to Stephenie Meyer’s The Host, have been acquired. Producers Nick Wechsle and Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz have the rights and Andrew Niccol will be writing the script and directing. Read below for details:

Producers Nick Wechsler, Steve and Paula Mae Schwartz have used their own money to acquire screen rights to “The Host,” the first adult novel written by Stephenie Meyer, author of the “Twilight” series.

Andrew Niccol will write the script and direct.

Meyer’s novel is a love story set in the near future on Earth, which has been assimilated by an alien species of benevolent parasites that call themselves “Souls.” One such soul, the Wanderer, is fused with a dying human named Melanie Stryder, in an attempt to locate the last pocket of surviving humans on Earth.

Wechsler and the Schwartzes are separately teamed on “The Road,” the John Hillcoat-directed adaptation of the Cormac McCarthy novel that will be released Nov. 25 by the Weinstein Co. They are also producing the Paul Schrader-scripted “The Dying of the Light” and an adaptation of Pete Takada book “An Eye at the Top of the World,” which Ryne Douglas Pearson is adapting.

In addition to writing four volumes of the “Twilight” series, Meyer has been heavily involved in the screen transfers, and she spurned several overtures for “The Host.” The producers continued lobbying the author and her UTA reps with a significant offer, a strong vision for the project and a collaborative spirit. Meyer eventually said yes.

In fact, Niccol first came under consideration after Wechsler and the Schwartzes asked Meyer what her favorite science fiction films are. “Gattaca” and “The Truman Show” were in her top five; Niccol wrote and directed “Gattaca” and scripted the Peter Weir-directed “The Truman Show.”

Niccol most recently wrote and directed Orlando Bloom starrer “The Cross.”

“We wanted Stephenie to be involved in the adaptation and have her endorse and be part of the creative decisions,” Wechsler said. “Twilight” has “proven she knows more about what works than most.”

Wow, finally we will see The Host become a movie. I loved the book, so I’m really excited to see it portrayed as a movie. I’m really glad Stephenie will be so involved in this one too.

What do you think of The Host being made into a movie?

This is so cool but i hope i dont get hate mail for this but i’m kinda happy that summit didnt buy it. Cause even though i loved twilight and cant wait to see new moon. Summit seems make more movies for teens and i would want a company that makes more adult type movies. To have the host cause i always though. That book was mostly a type of adult book to begin with. Especially since when i started it help feel less like a too young to read Stephenie Meyers books. Because when i started Twilight i definitely felt like i was a little too old. Especially since iam 26.

  • nicole

I think it will be fantastic so long as they don’t try to make it as an “Invasion of the Bodysnatchers” remake of sorts. That’s what I’m worried about. . .

  • RawSugar

WOW! I’m squealing like a hyper teenager right now in the middle of our office. I CAN’T wait to see who they cast for Ian O’Shea. He’s the reason I’ve converted from Team Edward. XD

I am so frealing excited to see this omg i am 15 this book might be more for adults but so what I love Stephenie Meyer. She is such a good auther I have read the twilight books millions of times and i first read host in sept and i have read it 4 times since i love it i hate when it gets to the end cuz its over :( but as soon as i heard about this becoming a movie i was dancing around the house and jumping up and down and screaming YAY! :P this is so cool i know he is in her other movie twilight and new moon but i think if they do this movie that Kellan Lutz should do the roll of Ian not only is he HOT! :P but he is a really good actor and very smart I LOVE YOU Stephenie Meyer

  • Kayla

    WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Yes, Finally I will get to see The host as a movie!! I hoope they find good actoers to portray the characters. OMFG!

  • melita

Well, I’ve read ALL Stephanie Meyer’s books and loved them all!!!
Espesially the host!!! My fav character is Melanie (of course) and Jamie. Maybe Jared and Ian, too. When I finished reading the host I thought it wouldn’t be filmed cause it wasn’t as famous as the TWILIGHT
series. And now that they filmed new moon, I didn’t have any hope at all (steph wrote the host after new moon). BUT NOW I’M SOOOO EXCITED!!!

  • Nora

Oh my god, I can't wait. I totally loved The Host. As mentioned, I hope the characters will be well recognizable. I must say, I truly, truly LOVE Steph. She is my goddess. Love Twilight, Love The Host. Go, Steph, go! Please don't let it end up like the first Twilight movie. I never watch it. I only read the first book over and over again. In the movie Edward and Bella talks to each other like what, three times? And then they've suddenly fallen in love. Like where did the trip into the meadow go?
    Anyway, good luck ^^

  • Megan W

Eeeeeeeeeeeeek! This movie is guna be amazing! I hope they. Don't screw up the cast though! It better be good! I would hope Jensen Ackles is Jared! He suits it so well! Eeeeeeeek, I can't wait!!! I hope that no cast from Harry Potter or Twilight are in it, they would kill it! Oh, and I hope the women arn't too pretty, as that could kill the movie too! Lol xx

  • Iveteemc

I’m really happy for this!!!!!!! I think that a really good choice for Ian is Justin Hartley because he really could be soooo sweettt!! that I really love him!!
