VARIETY SAYS ‘NEW MOON’ COULD OPEN TO $80 MILLION

Posted November 17th, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 6 Comments »

In a very interesting new article, Variety is stating that The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which we all know hits theaters on Friday, could bring in a whopping $80 million domestically on opening weekend! That is more than $10 million more than Twilight opened to last year. Read more from Variety below:

Summit Entertainment’s sequel “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” is looking to feed on the bloodstream of the worldwide box office as it unspools today in its first pack of territories before opening in the U.S. at 12:01 a.m. Friday.
The question is how big the sequel can go after last year’s surprise performance.

A year ago this weekend, the industry was stunned when “Twilight” opened to $69.7 million domestically, eventually grossing $191.5 million. The “Twilight” opening, combined with the strong bow of Warner Bros.’ “Sex and the City” just months before, upended the theory that female auds don’t usually fuel big openings.

There’s plenty of evidence suggesting that “New Moon” could open well north of “Twilight’s” domestic debut, which could mean a domestic opening of $80 million or even more. Sequel stars Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner in the title roles.

I think, hands down, that New Moon will rock Twilight at the box office. I’m no good with numbers so I won’t even throw a guess out there, but $80 million sounds pretty impressive. It’ll be interesting to hear the numbers next week! What do you think about Variety’s prediction? Do you have a guess as to what the film will make in it’s opening weekend?

I’m saying more than that. I don’t think people are realizing how NUTS this is. To put it in perspective (from my theater)…

Transformers 2 & Harry Potter this year.

T2..we sold out 1 midnight show…and 3/4 of another theater. And look at the totals it did opening weekend.

HP…sold out 3 midnight shows…did nothing for a 3am..and it was kinda disappointing for the Potter franchise…but still did well.

New Moon…sold out 3 midnights and 1 3am show with one more 3am show left to fill (maybe I’ll put a 3rd 3am show if that one gets filled). Plus we’ve sold out 4 shows this weekend and people are still showing up to purchase tickets and the phone is ringing off the hook.

New Moon will be the biggest this year….hands down.

I think it will open with more like $110-$120mil.

The only thing that bothers me so far? My local theater won’t open until 3 p.m. I have to drive to another town to see New Moon while my girls are still in school… I would think theaters that normally open later in the day (like my local one) would recognize the potential CASH coming in this weekend would maybe think, “HHHmmmm… Maybe we should open early to make MORE…” Ya think?

Wow 3pm? Really? Is it a Regal or AMC or chain? We’re open at noon daily. and do a ton of early morning group showings (schools, businesses etc). We have 200 people alone coming Friday morning before we open to see the show.

I think it will be more than 80million. According to fandango it’s the number one advanced ticket sales in history, beating out revenge of the sith and harry potter. It think it could reach 90-100million.

Agreed – I think $80 mil is quite low! I know so many more people now who are addicted to this franchise that hadn’t even heard of Twilight this time last year! I didn’t even go to opening weekend last year but ended up seeing it 17 times in the theatre – and this series is much, much bigger now!

I’m also conducting an opening weekend guessing contest amongst friends and co-workers – lowest guess is $90 mil and highest guess is $138 mil. I think it’ll surpass $100 and guessed $113.
