YAHOO: THE MOST RIDICULOUS MOVIE MOMENTS OF 2008 – ‘TWILIGHT’

Posted January 2nd, 2009 By: Team Switzerland 53 Comments »

Yahoo! has included a scene from ‘Twilight’ into their list of the most ridiculous movie moments of 2008. Which scene landed itself on the list? The baseball scene.

Here’s what Yahoo! had to say about why it ended up on the list:

TWILIGHT — VAMPIRE BASEBALL/WESTSIDE STORY MOMENT

Going into “Twilight,” you’d expect to see some teen angst, a little blood sucking, and a lot of moony-eyed swooning. Yet the baseball game might be a surprise. Apparently, vampires love to don uniforms popular during the Black Sox scandal and play ball in thunder storms. Apparently, Edward can bolt after any fly ball with lightning speed, even if the special effects used makes him look more like Speedy Gonzales than an undead dreamboat. And apparently when two rival bands of vampires meet, they face off Broadway-style, like the Sharks and the Jets in “West Side Story.”

(Thanks Rebecca)

Normally, I would crack up over something like this – but I really loved the baseball scene! Maybe they could have picked another scene to feature in the gallery, but I’m still sticking by the baseball scene.

How do you feel about them including this scene on the list? Do you agree with them? Is there another scene in ‘Twilight’ that you think they should have included instead?

OME!!! how can they thing Vamp baseball is a ridiculous moment ??? It’s the new favorite sport of a million girls and women out there! :P

  • Connie

I loved the baseball scene! It showed the playful side of the Cullen family.

  • gypsygirl30

I liked the baseball scene don’t understand why they would pick it.

  • Kolored

I actually loved baseball scene, so I find that quite offensive. :/ But I must agree with the special effects… Those made me crack up every time. :)

  • DaniB

Vampire baseball rocks. I want to see a full game.

  • Tracy

The baseball scene was not one I could really picture in my head as I was reading. The scene in the movie was awesome and the choice of song made it even more enjoyable. The special effects could have been better but I didn’t see anything worth complaining about.

On another note, I have seen several movies since Twilight that had bigger budgets and they had some of the same issues. In this economy I am actually more proud of how well they were able to do with a modest budget. The rushing through production is a concern and remains my biggest fear for New Moon. I am willing to give the new director a chance, but Catherine Hardwicke was probably right to ask for more time.

  • Ashleigh

Well I think the Baseball scene is like one of my favorite scenes so I am with you on that one “)

    No dissing the Baseball scene.
    Lol.
    :)

  • Rachel

That’s hilarious! The first time my friends saw the movie the compared the baseball scene to west side story and did the whole snapping thing and it was wicked funny. Now to hear yahoo comparing it to that is priceless!

  • Larissa

I agree with you guys. The baseball scene was completely awesome. It shows that there’s more to the vampires then sitting around and drinking blood. They like to play around and have fun, what’s wrong with baseball?

I loved the scene in the book and think they did a wonderful job translating it to the screen.

  • Heather

Again more people that have not read the book and know nothing of the story. The baseball scene is one of my favorites in the movie. Yeah, the special effects stink, but it was still cool watching Edward and Emmett go at it.

  • s.

The baseball scene? That’s one of the only places that the effects actually worked…now if they had chosen one of the running scenes, or the “I sparkle like a killer” moment, well, that I could have understood. **grin**

  • maggie

the baseball scene was one of my favorites!

  • imatruetwilightfannotsomebandwagonjumperwhoonlylikeditonceitwaspopular

DUH! of COURSE they picked it! it was hilareous!
dude, the hissing from rPattz and Cam made me crack up hysterically.

  • Skottie

This is silly. The baseball makes Emmett,Edward, Jasper, Alice and Rose seem more like teenagers and it makes Esme and Carlisle seem more human.

Ye the CGI’s not excellent but theres not good enough technology to make it excellent even with more time and a bigger budget.

  • Alisha

the baseball scene was one of the highlights of the movie.
it added a little humor to the movie.

  • emmy

It really was like West Side Story when they faced off! So funny (and cheesy.) I LOVED the baseball playing and Muse though!

  • cullenista

The Baseball Scene was one of my favourites!
I’d put the ‘first kiss scene’ first and the ‘baseball scene’ second in terms of my overall favourites of the movie.
    YAHOO! has this one WRONG.

  • kimmie cullen

OME! this scene was totally awesome!!! it showed their vampireness! and lemme tell you the cullen boys were lookin good! haha

    ^team edward^

  • Rachel

The scene I would have chosen for RIDICULOUS was the one where Bella walks into Biology class for the first time and Rob grabs his nose as if he just got a whiff of someone passing the worst gas ever. THAT was the WORST and most LAUGHABLE scene to me!!! He didn’t get that right AT ALL!!! His expression, while TOTALLY off the mark, was hysterical!!!

  • AllisCullen

I loved the baseball scene, but I kinda agree that the confrontation was more like “West Side Story” than I had imagined.

The most ridiculous scene, for me, was when Alice smells Bella’s blood in the Ballet Studio!!!! I totally expected her to then shove her hands under her armpits like Molly Shannon used to on Saturday Night Live!!!!!

  • kerri

I looooved the baseball scene! Especially when Edward and Emmett slammed into eachother then fell and Edward was laughing. It was a lighthearted moment and I personally loved it! The tension between Bella and Rosalie was great, too. Nikki is intimidating, yikes!

Yeah, I agree with AllisCullen, that was un-Alice to do that. But Cathrine had to show how difficult it was for the vamps to deal with blood being spilled before them.

  • ClassyAliceCullen11796

OMG!!! This was the best part! I love the way the music and effects were put together. If they think thats ridiculous then they better get thier eyes checked b/c that is the best scene. EVER!

  • http://twilightersanonymous.com/yahoo-most-ridiculous-movie-moments-2008-twilight-movie-baseball-scene.html fanpire

How can it be bad i mean its funny with Rosalie saying that Emmett is her monkey man and when edward and emmett crash into each other and then with alice throwing and them all playing its so good and it brings james into the picture. Its really effective.

  • cougar7

They obviously did not read the book therefore did not understand the baseball scene.

  • mikayla

well, it was my favourite scene.

a little bit ironic, that they mention this..
“like the Sharks and the Jets in “West Side Story.”

    grrr micheal copon, grrrrr

  • Katiie

What ? I LOVED that scene, it was one of the best in the movie because it showed the playful side all vampire and it had a awesome song!

  • Amy S

What does Yahoo know? They are just short of a gossip column anymore. I won’t even use their page anymore.

  • tatiana

i loved the baseball scene!! in the book they werent wearing those stupid uniforms so it was so much better. but it had to have been one of my favorite scenes in the movie! yahoo why did u have to pick this scene? really there were a couple of other scenes u couldve picked from

  • Allison

Well, I have to disagree with Yahoo. If the person who wrote the article read the book, then they would know that this scene was one of the most anticipated. The scene was great, the music was excellent. This was one of my favorites.

  • ashley

i thought the scene was ridiculous, and not in a good way. the fact that they were all dressed up in the baseball gear was over the top. then when james got there, the whole cullen family crouching was not very believable. they looked stupid, in my opinion – certainly they could have looked more menacing and tough! i’m a huge twillight fan so i’m not trying to rag but i have to agree with yahoo on this one.

  • Lainie88

    I loved the baseball scene

  • Lilly

I thought the baseball scene was amazing.
As i was reading the book I couldn’t really imagine it but in the movie it seemed like it should be.
The song they chose for the scene was what also made that scene even better than before. (Supermassive Black-Hole By: Muse)
    I love that song.
But I dont see how this made that list because this scene was actually one of the favorites of alot of Twilighters.. me included. This was like one of my favorite scenes. The econamy isn’t doing so well and this paticular movie making set wasn’t the most wealthy like disney or anything like that so they made the movie a lot like the book and they used their money quite well I think and I personally loved the baseball scene… expecially Jasper in his baseball outfit. He looked amazing! :]]

  • http://myspace.com/michaguy Michelle

I love the baseball scene, it was really cool and I believe very appropriate in the movie, & putting it with a song from Muse (Supermassive Back-Hole) I agree was a perfect match. The movie Twilight was amazing from beginning to end & I am looking forward to New Moon.

  • jenb

I LOVED the baseball scene. It was soooooo awesome! I was anxious to see how they would do it & it turned out perfect. The Muse song even added to it& made it awesome! Whoever made this list obviously hasn’t read the book to know what a pivotal & cool scene this was for the movie.

  • Sara

I love the baseball scene! It lightens up the mood and I can’t understand why it was picked! Well, we all have our opinions I guess….

  • Drives like a Cullen

    Ha…I LOVED the baseball scene…and I still cracked up :o P

They definitely go a little Sharks vs. Jets when James tried to take a bite out of Bella…all they needed was some groovy music and finger snaps!

  • oko

Oh really, I think a lot of people will beg to differ.
The baseball scene was by far one of the best things of
    that movie.

  • paige

I loved the baseball scene it’s one of the best scenes in my opinion. the only reason it’s a ridiculos scene is because alot of the scene is umpossible in reality and so therefore ridiculos

  • fadinglikeadeadstar

Seriously! The baseball scene was my favorite part especially when they put my favorite band (MUSE). The baseball scene was not ridiculous. I loved it.

  • cj

I don’t understand why everyone(critics) keep ragging on the baseball scene?! Personally it was one of my favorites. There were other scenes to pick on. The bio or cafeteria scene or no scene at all for that matter!

  • Chris

hands down, the most ridiculous scene was the awful ‘Meadow Scene”, i personally loved the baseball scene, but agree that the special effects left much to be desired

  • elle

I loooooooved the baseball scene. I didnt like the hissing in the confrontation…but the rest was GREAT

  • kelly

    WHAT THE HELL!!!!
THIS IS MESSED UP BECAUSE THAT SCENE WAS SUPPOSED TO SHOW THE CULLENS’ FUN SIDE!

  • twilightfan14

I loved the baseball scenes and the effects were actually pretty good-I do agree that the first time I saw the trailer, I did laugh when the two vamp “families” faced off and I did think of West Side Story-but when I saw the whole movie, I thought it worked. I still prefer my vamps with fangs-would have made this scene and the James/Edward fight scene in the ballet studio seem more real and definitely would have “looked” better on the big screen.

  • katherrrrrrine

um the baseball scene was like my absolute favorite scene. i totally loved it and thought that they did it perfectly. except for the effects lol

  • Rose Arcadia

My hubby wasn’t crazy about this movie until this scene! Now, whenever guys complain that their wives want to drag them to see Twilight, he not only explains to them about the “benefits” afterwards, but also adds “Dude, it’s got vampires playing baseball! You’ll never watch regular baseball the same again!”

  • KiddoCullen

I don’t care what Yahoo have to say. I LOVE the Baseball scene!

  • Trish

The baseball scene rocked — and my 17 year old son agreed. He saw Twilight multiple times, mostly for the baseball scene. It was fun – loved what Jasper did with the bat flipping, loved how Rosalie’s whack made Esmee’s hair whoosh, Alice’s pitching, especially Edward’s and Emmett’s mid-air crash and seeing Edward laughing afterward. It was all so much fun and didn’t feel cheesy. Don’t know what Yahoo was watching…

  • Joanne Maria

The Baseball scene was one of my favorite.

  • Kelly

I must admit; the special effects weren’t that convincing, but other than that, I thought that the baseball scene was one of the best scenes in the entire movie!

tsk tsk these people have no taste!

  • Cindy

The baseball scene was one of my favourites. Although I agree with the special effects not being the greatest, there were so many revealing mistakes that they could have picked up on….why go after a scene that at least came from the actual book?

  • syleni

The baseball scene is fantastic! I am not discounting summit ent and am really thankful that they have given Twilight a chance to be made as a flick but we must admit that they are not as big as Warner Bros. who funded another book-to-movie series and do all the special effects. Am very certain that the Summit and the rest did their best to make the most out of what they have.
Check this out “you’d expect to see some teen angst, a little blood sucking, and a lot of moony-eyed swooning” its ridiculous to be creative then.
TWILIGHT –> NOT YOUR TYPICAL VAMPIRE MOVIE

  • Christina

Well YAHOO, I guess you can say by the gross of comments and harrasment that you have probably gotten from making a scene from twilight be on your ridiculous list, that it was the biggest mistake you could have made.

Hope your proud of the what? Millions of Twilight fans that have stopped using your email and ummm wait? using your web page for anything more then oh wait…. do I need to look up something… ohhh Ill just go to GOOGLE!!!!

By the way, scene was awesome, look forward to New Moon, and yeah west side story a lil bit, but come on, budget time ect. What could YOU have done to make it anymore possibly better without cutting other areas of the movie? NONE

    Thanks

    Christina
