TWILIGHT WAS BIGGER THAN DARK KNIGHT?!

Posted December 30th, 2008 By: Team Switzerland 18 Comments »

Twilight is featured on the Yahoo! homepage…again! Yahoo! Movies has a new article about the winners, losers, and in-betweeners of the movie world for 2008. One of the winners? Twilight, of course! They also talk about how even though Dark Knight was huge, Twilight still beat it out in terms of best rate of return.

Here’s a bit of what they had to say:

If only Wall Street had bet on Twilight. Or Hannah Montana. Or Kirk Cameron.

With a $167.3 million overall domestic take as Sunday, per Box Office Mojo, Twilight made more than four times its reported $37 million production budget—the best rate of return on any film in the 2008 Top 10, including The Dark Knight.

Here’s a look of the top-grossing films of 2008 through Sunday based on numbers compiled by Box Office Mojo:

• The Dark Knight, $530.8 million • Iron Man, $318.3 million • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, $317 million • Hancock, $227.9 million • WALL-E, $223.8 million • Kung Fu Panda, $215.4 million • Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, $174.9 million • Twilight, $167.3 million • Quantum of Solace, $164.3 million • Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!, $154.5 million (Originally published Dec. 29, 2008 at 1:35 p.m. PT)

Wow! That is a pretty huge achievement. We all knew how tiny the budget was – but Twilight made more than 4 times it’s budget! That is awesome.

What do you think of these numbers? Were you surprised at all? How do you think Twilight ranks compared to the other movies on the list?

its only obvious the dark knight was the best movie of ’08 and twilight was way to overrated.yes this year did need a good love movie but it didn’t even have all the good quality to be known as that unlike the dark knight that did meet all expectations and was truly worth watching over and over again

  • CAEdge

I saw the Dark Knight twice… second time I saw more flaws and didn’t like it as much. I wanted more Batman. I’ve seen Twilight 4 times so far and it gets better each time. Will probably see it again… So there you go.

  • Sharon

Dark Night was incredible. Even though I loved Twilight, Dark Night had a much better quality to it, and that made all the diffference.

  • Mary

Twilight was a very good movie. Yes it did have some flaws in there and so did batman. The only reason Batman topped the 2008 box office was because of Heath Ledgers death.

  • Evie

Well, its obivious as to why “Twilight” had a better return rate. They spent NO MONEY on the actors! The “actor” who plays Edward Cullen is only capable of making one facial expression! A great way to butcher the book.

    Worst Movie Ever.

    Twilight BIGGER than TDK..
    No, just NO.

  • Ashleigh

    Wow that is amazing!

I acctully just finshed watching the dark night for the first time.
    :)

    Its was good.
But not as good as twilight ofcorse lol.

I cant wait to see what happends when it comes out on DVD.

Hmmm, obsession over popular opinion. However will answer this question?

I saw Dark Knight 3 times and liked it less each time. By the third viewing I realized that it was only hype that carried it. I didn’t like any of the characters – certainly not the female lead, or the DA, and love Heath Ledger though I always have (he’s the only reason I went to see the movie in the first place) his character was just too over the top – too dark and weird.

I’ve seen Twilight 12 or 13 times now – I knew this morning but I started celebrating New Years a little while ago and my brain is mush – and I enjoy it MORE every time I see it – even if the baseball scene and that weird stuttering thing Bella does in the hospital makes me more uncomfortable each time I see them.

Twilight all the way – can’t wait for it to come out on DVD.

They were both good! But Ive seen twilight three times and Im maybe going for the fourth time, but I cant watch dark knight twice because its not as good as twilight! Even if it is a famously low budget, who cares! The movie was excellent!

  • sasi

Twilight bigger than TDK?? YES YES YES
I watched Dark Knight once, and Twilight 6 times now, going to watch it for the 7th times (who wouldn’t love the baseball scene!?)…so, there you have it!! I think what makes Dark Knight so great was Heath Ledger. No matter what people says, TWILIGHT is still the greatest!!

Twilight had the best return on what they spent, this doesn’t in any way make it the “biggest” movie of the year. It could have had the same budget as The Dark Knight and would have still come back with $160M or so. The people that wanted to see it, saw it and saw it many times, nobody else even bothered. The Dark Knight was an event, it was the second highest grossing movie of all time, behind only Titanic. Twilight couldn’t even beat Madagascar 2 at the box office and you’re saying it’s the biggest of the year? In fact, if you’re going to actually look at the percentage of what a film made compared to its budget, Kirk Cameron made a film for $500,000 which grossed over $30M, so maybe THAT was the biggest movie of the year.

I’m just looking forward to the final numbers in 2009 when Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince destroys New Moon in the box office!

  • Tori

The dark Knight is obviously the better movie here. Because Twilight didn’t actually make more money the tweeny fan girls are resorting to things like statistics which has nothing to do with the quality of the movie. The fact that 170 million is four times the budget should say something in itself….Twilight was an okay movie but it isn’t in the same realm as the dark knight. With a worldwide gross of 900 million and an American gross of 500 million it’s the second highest grossing film of all time. In a year or so all the tween fan girls will have long forgotten Edward the sparkling vampire ,but Ledger’s amazing performance will last for decades to come

  • Austin

Yeah. Dark Knight had a way bigger range of fans than Twilight did. Twilight is overrated and just has obsessive fans that watch it again and again. And part of the reason it’s so big is because people think Edward’s hot… wth is up with that? That doesn’t make it a better movie!

  • Someone

ANYBODY who says twilight is better than the dark knight is most likely a fan girl. I doubt that any dudes voted Twilight was better than the dark knight. And most likely those fan girls are in their teen years. Now I don’t how this possibly happened. But a lower rated,(meaning critically on rotten tomatoes and metacritic) cheaper,(as in stupid cheap with stupid special effects not like a good indie film ex slumdog millionaire)dumber, low grossing(compared with TDK), movie beat out the dark knight and slumdog millionaire on the MTV movie awards. I mean what type of a movie age do we live in today. Do young teenage girls not appreciate a good movies anymore. All they want is a love story with hotties is that what they want. The Dark Knight was the big movie of 2008 and was beat down by this pathetic excuse for a movie. And Slumdog millionaire even won best picture at the Oscars but got NOTHING at the Mtv movie awards.

  • Mekari

I never read the books and I went to see Twilight with an open mind, one I love vampire movies, two I went with a friend who is a huge fan of the books and I liked what she said about the story. I swear I thought the movie was a comedy, the guy playing Edward trying to make a sexy face made me laugh the most. The only sexy looking guy in the movie was the main baddie. As for the acting, well… it was horrible, the immersion was constantly broken. You know when we left the theater my friend was even dissapointed.

The Dark Knight had top notch actors and all of them gave a great performance plus it gave us a story with more surprises and twists.

Now if you want to see a great story about the love between a vampire and a human with great acting then watch TrueBlood or Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

  • alycia

what kills me is the losers on a twilight website talkin shit about twilight why are you here?

  • Noone

The dark knight was the biggest movie of the year and also close the biggest movie ever. Twilight was ok but the dark knight was amazing. The dark knight grossed 1 billion dollars worldwide the forth movie ever to gross 1 billion.
