Twilight is not just the time between sunset and dusk, but also the time between dawn and sunrise. Sunlight that is scattered in the upper atmosphere illuminates the lower atmosphere, and the surface of the Earth is not completely lit or completely dark either. The sun itself is not actually visible because it has passed below the horizon (sunset)or it has not yet come over the horizon (sunrise).
Twilight is often confused with dusk, but is specifically defined as the period before or after night-time during which it is possible to conduct outdoor activities without the aid of artificial light.
Here on this site however, Twilight is the first book in what is known as the Twilight Saga. In this book, Edward, a vampire, describes twilight as the safest, easiest time of the day for them but also the saddest as it is the end of another day.
Twilight is also the root of the term used by fans of this series, "Twilighters."
