Saoirse Ronan, known for her roles in Hanna, Atonement and The Lovely Bones has been cast as the unstoppable Melanie Stryder. Read more below:

EXCLUSIVE: Saoirse Ronan has been set to star in The Host, the screen adaptation of the bestselling novel by Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer. Scripted by Andrew Niccol, the film figures to be one of the hot titles when Inferno launches sales at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival next week. Niccol, who was originally set to direct, might resurface as the filmmaker.

Ronan, the Oscar-nominated star of Atonement, The Lovely Bones and most recently Hanna, will play Melanie Stryder, one of the last humans putting up a fight against an alien species called Souls. These parasites invade human bodies, fuse to each person’s consciousness and systematically erase their personalities.

WOW she is WAYYY too young!! I totally thought that Melanie would be early to mid twenties. This was not an “young adult” novel. This seems to me like they are trying to make it one.

    • Jfvaldez

      She was17 in the book.

      • Guest

Actually she was 20 yrs old in the book

      • Bellalamb33

melanie was 20 in the book. Wanda was 16, but turning 17 in like a month or so.

  • Redhotcheryl04

Loved the book, hope the movie is as good!!!

  • Jennayag

I think she’ll do great in the movie!! :)
even if she looks young in the pictures of her doesn’t mean she can’t pull of the look of an older character either… they hired her because she was really good at playing the part so I’m sure she will do great :)

      Finally, a sane post.

I love her as an actress but I think that she is too young to play Melanie

  • Chani2010

is that a pic of the actor?? wtf shes way to young and she doesnt look very tuff /athlectic like in the book

  • MSUBando

I imagined Melanie to be in her early 20s so Saoirse seems too young to me. I’m worried now that Jared and Ian are going to be teenagers too. As an older Stephanie Meyer fan, I liked that the characters in The Host were a little older. The book itself was classified as adult fiction. I’m wondering if they are trying to still appeal to the younger Twilight audience.

    • Bellalamb33

I agree, i’m 16 but i am really picky about my books when they turn them into movies. I loved the host and i hate when directors mess up the casting. Saoirse would make a much better Wanda

  • MMV

Noooooo! She looks nothing like the character in the book. Dangit. Hopefully they know what they are doing….

  • Safi177

Wow. I mean no doubt she’s a good actress but she’s NOTHING like Melanie. Melanie is tall and strong and tan with brown hair and green eyes. She would make an excellent Wanda yes but not Melanie. This is such a bummer, makes you wonder if the others are going to be cast badly. Like MSUBando said, I hope they’re not still trying to attract younger twilight fans.

    • Sarah

I 100% agree! Wanda for SURE but not what I would have pictured for Melanie. She is a bit too soft. Talented without argument but lets hope that the makeup department works its magic on her!

  • Luisandnita

no no no she dosent fit the part melanie suppose to be tan and shes like 20 in the book they are gonna fuck it up with a bunch of teenagers

  • Kirstydh

Melanie was 21 in the book. She does not fit the part of her at all. This is gonna piss me off of they actually keep her for this movie. The book is so amazing, don’t ruin it.

    • Stone8dragon

Why aren’t you one great big ball of sunshine.

  • Stranger

“At first glance, the casting might seem a little bit strange, since Melanie is described as tan skinned with dark hair, and Saoirse is very pale and blond. But beyond that, the fit is perfect—light eyes, athletic build, about 5′ 7″—and we actually think with a tan and some hair dye Saoirse would end up looking like a perfect Melanie.”

I think she is too young and I don´t image Melanie like Saoirse. Melanie has brown hair and green eyes and I imagine her like strong woman…
