JACOB BLACK WOLF GROWS A PAIR…OF FANGS

Posted November 5th, 2009 By: wolfsbane 41 Comments »

One obvious and really exciting evolution we noticed from the first New Moon trailer here to the latest here are the distinct changes made to Jacob’s wolf form.

Truth be told, the first New Moon trailer featuring the Jacob-to-Wolf snap transformation already had me looking for my sleeping bag and staking out a spot in line. Jake’s 30 foot leap culminating with a snarling hulk of a wolf was the hands-down highlight of the 90 second tidbit. The fine CGI work seemed to me a clear indication of Summit’s commitment to the saga and coupled with New Moon Movie‘s casting coups, it really looked like they were pulling out all the stops to make us forgive and forget the less than stellar effects of Twilight.

Jacob Wolf Comparison Video

The first trailer’s wolf was most certainly a badass. It had excellent CGI work and it appeared to me that they took some visual cues from the Eastern Timber Wolf, with reddish highlights over a full mane, and a shaggy winter coat topping bare fore and rear limbs. There was still a cartoonish feel to it, but I had chalked it off to unfinished rendering, it was after all a really early preview of the movie.

Take a look for yourself:

The new trailer brought with it a whole new Jacob wolf, and I must say, it certainly is badder, er, badderasser! Gone are the Timber Wolf red highlights (or as my sister likes to call it, Clairol Sedona Sunset) and in its place are the deadly drab browns that a wolf hunting rogue vamps in Fork’s forests would be more at ease in. We now see features taken from the Grey Wolf: The shorter, one-length fur, slightly larger nose topping a narrower snout, and the aggressive stalking posture of a wolf with dinner in sight.

Note the major differences besides the fur color change:

The eyes are more slanted, reminiscent of the wolf in ’300′, and gives off a menacing stare.

The upper set of fangs are more pronounced and appear aged, giving an impression of past battles and well, a darn scary bite.

The fighting snarl created by the narrower snout also makes the wolf more intimidating.

All in all, I see welcome changes in the right direction. I’m pleased to see the Summit guys constantly tweaking this movie to make it better and not resting on their Twilight laurels. True, it has a lot more to live up to, but I can’t help but notice that Summit’s been much more active in listening to fan feedback and applying it to the movie in realtime. New Moon promises to be the true Fan’s Film that we are all hoping for it to be.

If Jacob’s wolf is any indication of how hard the New Moon movie is going to rock our faces, then we can expect to be sitting in the theatres come midnight on the 19th, jaws on the floor, popcorn uneaten, minds blown.

Little Red Riding Hood better watch out, this isn’t your gramma’s forest anymore.

Wolfsbane signing out.

Holy Crap! Who wrote this? I love you! I keep checking the forum for this to be posted. I have to blah blah blah!

Great writing. I LOVE the new wolf. Summit listened to the fans, Thank God!

    YOU ROCK!

  • Emilia

I agree, the first one didn’t look finished and did look cartoon-ish, possibly even cute. I remember thinking “that can’t be it” when i saw the first clips. I guess i was expecting too much too soon immediately and expected it to be reminiscent of how realistic the polar bear looked in Golden Compass which made me want to reach out and touch the fur it looked so real. I’m really digging the updated wolf, it’s going to be amazing, i can’t waiiit :]

  • Emily

I completely agree with this entire posting. Great article. :) Awesome new wolf - completely baddasser. :P

  • http://TwilightersAnonymous.com Bella Cullen

YES, thank you Summit for improving the wolf!

And thank YOU wolfsbane for your great article! Well said as usual, you always bring a thoughtful and funny perspective to things. Can’t wait to hear your review of the movie!

  • AllisCullen

I actually liked the coloring better in the original, but LOVE the new, fiercer, muzzle!! Can’t wait!!

  • Chris

I tried to be patient but I’m just not. Maybe I’m looking for this in the forum in the wrong spot. Okay anyway.

I LOVE the new wolf. Fluffy in the first trailer just didn’t do it for me. He definitely was not menacing enough. I preferred the wolf in 300. Make him dark and make him mean, I mean for crying out loud it’s a WOLF and he’s pissed or badderasser. lol The fangs, snarl and frightening eyes are spot on. The new fur color is far superior. We’re not talking Lassie, we’re talking about a mangy-ish wolf.

Oh and before I forget, the Title of this is HILARIOUS! “JACOB BLACK WOLF GROWS A PAIR…OF FANGS” You’re brilliant.

Perfect article. Howl at the moon!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Christine

I Love it !!! But I really Love all the Books cant wait for the New Moon ,,,I just cant wait to see everything come together like this your ALL Amazing ♥ :0)

  • Katelyn.Hearts.Taylor

Wow. I didn’t realize the difference but its huge!!!!
I was absolutely in love with the old wolf but i have to admit the new one is a million times better and that’s hard to do. Good job Chris and CGI men! You rock, we love you!

  • TaliMoo

I definately prefer the newer one. It looks more realistic and just so dang awesome!

I was wondering when someone was going to write about the major differences.

  • amanda kay

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE this!!! The new one looks so much better. More realistic than the 1st one. Great article too!!

  • alice

I like the new eyes, they have more depth into them. The way they sorta described them in the book and in eclipse.

  • Vale

The first wolf is cartoonish, and CUTE, and…the eyes…are kind of blue? IDK, the second one has kind of Jake’s eyes, and is more…intimidating?…But its also cute!!! aweee !!! ….THIS MOVIE WILL BE GRRREEEEAAAAT!!!!!!

  • Chelle

Awesome article! Fun too!!! I’m so much happier with the new wolf, so glad they gave the old one a haircut (esp after that guinew moon OMG totally ruined the old wolf for me LOL). This one’s definitely more intimidating. Been staring at it, I think I finally now see Jacob’s eyes in there :) Are there any close ups of the rest of the wolf pack??? It’ll take me a while to distinguish between all of them. 14 days!!!

  • jam

while i do agree the new wolf looks more badass than the original one, i think the first one is more appropriate for jacob seeing as how he’s just newly come into his heritage…as for the color, i think the new one is better…

    but, whatever! i LOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEE EDWARD!!!!

i do like taylor lautner better than robert pattinson…just sayin’….tee-hee! :p

  • Diane Dale Jannie D. Sarong

  • AmandaCullen

It does look better but in the book it says that Jacob’s fur is russet colored. hopefully Sam has black fur like in the books, and Quil has chocolate brown fur…..

  • Jackie C.

i liked the 1st Wolf better

  • neSSie eJ!!

  • Jessie

I like the coloring of the first wolf better, it fits more with how Stephanie describes it. But overall, the second wolf is awesome - it looks like Chris and the CGI teams have done a stellar job. You can tell from the clip that Sam is dark black (at least I am assuming it’s Sam, I don’t know who else it would be).

And one of things that I appreciate the most is that Chris made sure that the eyes of the wolves were the same color as the actors’ eyes. He said in an interview that it was important that he keeps them because the wolves speak so much with their eyes, and that is how Bella recognizes Jacob (and I think my favorite shot so far is the one of Bella’s reflection in the eyes of Jacob’s wolf. If you look at a very large close-up of Taylor’s face you can see the similarity in the eyes.

Amazing article - keep up the good work.

  • Sky

I agree AliceCullen. I like the coloring of the other wolf but the new one looks alot less cartoony. So I would say I like the new one better but am gonna be picky I do like the color of the old onebut I agree it does show their commiment to the fans and the movie and the book itself. Can’t wait!!

  • Mary

I like the overall look of the new wolf, but I did like the coloring of the fist wolf better. If they could have put that coloring on the new wolf, It’d be pretty darn good in my opinion!

  • http://hi sedalinda

bin so froh das es weiter geht..mit twilight… leute bin sehr gespant echt:-)…

  • kallie

i think the new one is awesome!!!! cant wait to see the movie!! i read the first working on getting the next!!!!!!!!

  • http://edward edward kolik

edwarda aşık oldummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.onu göremyorum.aama onu resmini grmeden bir gün bile geçiremiyorum.

  • Jones19

Wow I didn’t realize how much of a difference there was! The new wolf looks way more realistic and menacing. The only thing I wish they hadn’t done was tone down the red so much, his coat should have a little more rust to it than the second wolf. Maybe this isn’t the finished version. Who knows?

  • Lainie88

I’m happier with the second wolf. He looks more realistic and more fierce. To me the first wolf’s coloring was too dog-like. even though I pictured Jakes color a little darker I’m still thrilled with it. CANT WAIT. 2 WEEKS !!!!!!!

  • Kiersten

I CAN NOT WAIT ANY LONGER FOR THE MOVIE TO COME OUT I AM ABOUT TO SCREAM BUT IM GOING TO SEE IT ON MY BIRTH DAY HAHAHAHA SO I AM SOO EXITED!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Navy

Wow, I thought I was going crazy when I noticed all the small changes. I loved the old wolf… I really did. It seemed it moved a bit better and wasn’t as blockish as the new one. True, the new one does look a bit more realistic, but not when they’re in action and moving. Oh well, I’m just pleased someone else was as skeptic as the change as I was. Thank you for the wonderful article.

  • http://twilightersanonymous.com/jacob-black-wolf-form-comparisons.html ERMIE

Great article!!! I thought the first wolf looked very unrealistic. I really like the newer wolf except the coloring is supposed to have a little more red and definately Jacob as the wolf is supposed to be very shaggy. I cannot wait to see it from start to finish. THE WAIT IS ALMOST OVER. Yea!!!

  • wolfboy

the first wolf was alright but this new one blows the first one out of the water the first one i could wake up and it could be staring me in the face and i would be about as scared as i would be if a fly was looking me in the face this new one might scare me a little but they could still do better make it a little darker could do better on the eyes i mean come on i have a friend tha owns 3 wolves and compared to his wolves these are about as scary as a squirel lying dead on the roadthey could do much better i mean these are supposed to be massive terrifying vampire hunting wolves for pete sake not cute little wolf pups these are not scary in the least little bit put some effort into it people my god.

  • http://twilightersanonymous.com/jacob-black-wolf-form-comparisons.html Ronja Snow

i think that the new wolf is great!
and may i say that Taylor Lautner is so fine!! he is just so sexxy and Robert Pattinson well he is just drop-dead gorgeous. i can’t wait until new moon i have waited such long time now!

  • Victoria

wowww. thats some crazy crap! i can’t wait!! only like 13 days! thank god cuz i don’t think i could wait anymore!! yaya :D

new wolf rocks and it’s obvious that the rest of the movie will too!
    so excited!!

  • Tori

The eyes looked more human for the first one.

  • james’girl

hey i could care less how Jacob looks hes sexy every and any way!!lol!!i love Jacob Black!!!

  • ReyesScully

the new wolf is FUGLY! i LOVED the old wolf….why did they have to ruin it?!

  • danceswithwands

OH WOW thank goodness! I remember when I saw the trailer the first time thinking…. oh so in the movie Jacob is just a shaggy dog - the cgi was soooo bad. As someone who has had a wolf I must say the new cgi is MUCH closer to what a wolf should look like! I’m really glad to see that they took the time to fix all the things that made the old wolf look soooo cheesy. I wasn’t too excited about the movie at first thinking that it was going to be an eww-cheap-effects film…. now I am very excited to see it!

  • Anya

Okay, does no one else feel like they could stick a key in the new wolf’s back and wind it up? It looks like a stuffed dog! I really hope that one doesn’t make it to the final cut.

  • joy

i like the new one but i just wish they would have kept the original fur color because jacob’s fur is supposed to be more of a russet color to match his skin instead of just plane tan

  • Denise

    I love it.
It’s just like I pictured and I’m glad Summit stepped it up a notch.

Only thing I would fix is the eyes.
They’re supposed to be the same color as Jacob’s.
The eyes were a pretty strong point in the book.

  • jess

To be honest it looks the same to me but now his eyes and fur are the wrong colours and the teeth are also really yellow :/
