‘Twilight’ Referenced on ‘True Blood’ and ‘Entourage’

Posted August 22nd, 2011 By: Evie 3 Comments »

Referencing Twilight in a movie or television show has almost become the “cool” thing to do these days. It seems like we hear a new Twilight mention on just about every tv show that targets a young adult audience. Now HBO has gone followed suit with not just one of their programs, but two! Both True Blood and Entourage recently picked up the Twilight theme in some very funny ways. Check out the clips after the jump:

NSU Hopes to Spark Interest in English Course with ‘Twilight’

Posted August 21st, 2011 By: Evie 1 Comment »

Courses on Twilight or courses that incorporate the books, have been springing up at colleges and universities all over the country in the past couple of years. Now the English Department at Nicholls State University is incorporating the Twilight series in the hopes of drawing more students into their courses. Read more below:

Nicholls State University has revamped its English course list this year, adding classes about the wilderness, sports and the popular “Twilight” book series.

“We’re trying to get what students are interested in, what students find engaging, what resonates with them,” said department head Ellen Barker.

This year’s offerings for the English 102 course, which almost every student takes, include course titles like “Edible English,” “The Horror Film,” and “The ’60s.”

Course titles for the 210 class include “Literature in the Bible,” “New Orleans Literature,” “Sports Literature,” “Literature and the Wilderness,” and “ ‘Twilight’ Series Allusions.”

John Doucet is dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, which includes English. He said the department is trying to ramp up interest in English classes, which are an important part of his college’s curriculum.

Fandom Flashback: The Casting of ‘The Twilight Saga’

Posted August 20th, 2011 By: Evie 6 Comments »

The Twilight Lexicon has a fun little feature that looks back at the days when the filmmakers were first doing the casting for The Twilight Saga. Included in the story are the rather intense reactions that came with the casting of Kristen Stewart as Bella and Robert Pattinson as Edward, and what Stephenie Meyer herself had to say about all of it. Flashback to the casting after the jump:

The date was Dec. 11, 2007. And this was how we posted the news that day: “Summit Entertainment announced that Robert Pattinson, an actor from the UK, has been cast as Edward Cullen.”

And the world went crazy.

Not in the way that you think. I’m sure those of you that fell in love with Edward because of Robert Pattinson will find it surprising that so many people absolutely hated this decision. Personally, Laura and I laughed a little because as Harry Potter fans we had a bit of a difficult time picturing Edward with a wand fighting off Voldemort… I mean the Volturi. But our laughter didn’t last long given that this one announcement crashed the Lexicon! We’d had high traffic before with book releases, but nothing anywhere near the amount of traffic that came in on that one day. It actually led us to separate the blog from the forums and run them on two separate servers to be able to handle the hits coming at us! To paraphrase our server company, “Do you people realize you’ve had over 300,000 hits in the last half hour? What the heck kind of site are you people running?”

Do you remember the craziness from casting?

The Effect of ‘The Twilight Saga’ on Pop Culture

Posted August 19th, 2011 By: Evie 4 Comments »

There’s no denying that The Twilight Saga has had a huge effect on pop culture in the last few years, but just what can be attributed to the vampire craze? Check out the latest from Reuters after the jump:

Vampires have been a focal point of literature since Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, “Dracula”. But fascination, particularly among young people, has peaked in recent years with the popularity of the “Twilight” books about teenage vampires and the television series, “True Blood.”

“I think the vampire is a metaphor for the outsider and the predator in all of us,” said author Anne Rice, whose Vampire Chronicles series has captured the imaginations of horror fans since the 1970s.

“We’re all conscious at times of being alone, of being alienated, of being a secret self that fears exposure to the judgments of others. So we feel like vampires,” she told Reuters.

Dr. Thomas Garza, who teaches a course in vampire lore at the University of Texas, said young people might aspire to be like vampires because they cheat death and are able to stay beautiful, powerful, and youthful for eternity.

The modern vampire in popular culture is more attractive, suave, and fashionably dressed than the Old World Slavic vampires, adding to the resurgence of their appeal, he added.

“I would say that it is the Twilight saga in particular that has brought out the younger teen fans. In that connection, Edward is a very ‘safe’ vampire, a kind of ‘starter vamp’ for beginners, if you will,” Garza said.

“He’s pretty, yes, so the seduction’s there, but he’s more than reluctant to act on his and Bella’s sexual desires. He can go out in daylight - and even ‘sparkles’ in the sun, giving him a completely non-threatening character. He drives a Volvo, for goodness sake.”

Cam Gigandet Still Loves ‘Twilight’

Posted August 17th, 2011 By: Evie 1 Comment »

Next Movie caught up with Cam Gigandet to ask the actor five questions about his recent roles, in honor of his movie Priest being released on DVD. Here Cam tells Next Movie how Twilight really did change his life, and how he might forever be known as that guy who broke Bella’s leg. Read more below:

In the final analysis, do you get more attention from fans for killing Marissa Cooper or breaking Bella’s leg?

[Laughs] I’m going to have to go with the “Twilight” fans because… they are really never-ending. I played paintball this past weekend with my dad — the whole day, people would come up and say “Oh, you’re the guy from -” and if it was a girl, without fail, the girl would bring up ‘Twilight.” They used to bring up “The O.C.” but not so much anymore.

The guys who came up to me this past weekend — it was always “Never Back Down.” Which is interesting.

Thankfully, “Twilight” set me up for a really long time. Everything that has such success and a fan following makes my job easier. It’ll always help me, for the rest of my career.

Kellan Lutz Talks ‘Twilight’, ‘Immortals’ and Future Career Plans

Posted August 7th, 2011 By: Evie 3 Comments »

While at Comic Con a couple of weeks ago, Kellan Lutz posed for some photographs and had a chat with Just Jared. Here Kellan talks about what it was like to conclude the Twilight Saga and how he originally was supposed to audition for Edward - but found Emmett more appealing. Read it all after the jump:

Just Jared: Talk to us about concluding the Twilight films now that you filmed the last 2 movies…

Kellan Lutz: I look back, and you know, I was working as an actor, it was really cool, I was very fortunate. I had just finished up Generation Kill which took me seven months in Africa and a very epic project to work with for HBO and then I got on the ride of Twilight and that took off and it’s like Superman, the ride at Six Flags, where you just shoot and you have no idea what’s going on and it just continuously gets higher and higher and more enjoyable.

JJ: Coming from the HBO projects, I’m sure you had many ideas for your career, not knowing Twilight would become what it was, did you almost turn down the role?

KL: Yeah, I didn’t want to do it. I spent so much time filming in Africa, seven months, and that’s a long time to be away from your family and dogs. My agent wanted me to read for Edward and I read the script and thought that character was too depressing for me right now, I want to do something where I smile. I wanted to take a break from acting and I said that, I turned it down, I turned down the audition a couple of times. Ryan, my agent at the time really knew it was going to be a special project so he told me to read the role of Emmett, and I read it, it was only about four lines, but he was the big brother, the comedic relief and I fell in love with him. I said “Sure, I would love to play this type of role”. I auditioned, and long story short, here I am finishing the saga and Emmett is going to be in my heart forever.
